Noosa Everglades Questions, Answered

Cruise, canoe or kayak: here is what each trip covers, how long it runs, and what to pack for a day out on the river.

Questions People Ask Before Booking

What Tours Can I Choose From?

There are three main types. Cruises run 2.5 hours on the dark tannin waters, cruise-and-canoe combos mix a boat ride with paddling, and kayak trips come guided or self-guided over 6 to 7.5 hours. There is also a private hinterland day trip with door-to-door pickup. If you want a short, easy outing pick a cruise; if you want to actually paddle the upper river, pick a kayak or combo trip.

How Long Does Each Tour Take?

The two afternoon cruises run about 2.5 hours. The cruise with lunch extra runs 4.5 hours, 9am to 1.30pm. Canoe and kayak trips run roughly 6 to 7.5 hours, with the 7.5-hour self-guided kayak listing noting about 6 hours of actual kayaking. The private hinterland day runs 7.5 hours door to door.

What Do The Tours Cost?

Prices are per person. The 2.5-hour afternoon cruise starts from $69, and the afternoon tea cruise from $70. The 4.5-hour cruise with lunch extra starts from $117, and the 6-hour canoe trip from $120. Guided kayak trips run from $137 to $148, while self-guided kayaks start from $80 and $86. The private hinterland day starts from $527 per person.

What Is The Cancellation Policy?

Most tours offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, including the 2.5-hour cruise, the 4.5-hour cruise, the 6-hour canoe trip and the private hinterland day. The afternoon tea cruise asks for 48 hours notice. The 7.5-hour guided kayak and 7.5-hour self-guided kayak also offer a full refund if you cancel ahead. The 6-hour self-guided kayak lists no free cancellation, and the full-day guided kayak puts its terms on the live listing, so check before booking.

Is Hotel Pickup Included, Or Do I Drive Myself?

Most kayak tours launch from Elanda Point on Lake Cootharaba, about 25 minutes north of Noosa, while cruises include coach transfers from selected Noosa stops and the private day picks up at your door. The 6-hour canoe trip can arrange round-trip transfers from central Noosa, which you confirm when booking. The private hinterland day is the only one with door-to-door pickup at your home or accommodation; the cruise tours include coach or shuttle transfers from selected Noosa stops instead. Both launching areas are accessible by 2WD.

What Should I Bring And Wear?

Bring a hat, sunscreen, water and clothes you do not mind getting splashed, since canoe and kayak trips mean sitting near, and sometimes in, the water. Morning refreshments or drinks are included on several tours, but lunch is only included on the guided kayak trips and the private hinterland day, so pack food or money for the on-site bistro on the others. QPWS advises crossing Lake Cootharaba early in the morning when conditions are likely calm, so a warm layer for early starts helps.

When Is The Best Time Of Year To Go?

September is the driest month near Tewantin, averaging 57.8mm of rain over about 5.8 rain days, and August is close behind at 76.9mm. March is the wettest, averaging 236.4mm over 14.2 rain days, and February is similar. Temperatures peak around 28.7 degrees in January and sit near 21.4 degrees in July. Note these are averages, not typical values, since wet years pull the means up.

What Wildlife Will I See?

The Cooloola Recreation Area holds more than 350 bird, 75 mammal, 21 frog and 80 reptile species, though those figures cover the whole park, not the Everglades alone. Early morning or late afternoon is best for waterbirds such as cormorants, wood ducks, egrets, spoonbills and darters around Fig Tree Point. You can look for stingrays in the waters around the Kinaba Information Centre, and listen for frog choruses along the upper river. Do not feed wildlife.

Are These Tours Suitable For Kids Or Swimming?

The listings do not state age limits or swimming stops, so confirm directly with the operator before booking with children. Group sizes vary: the afternoon tea cruise and the 6-hour canoe trip cap at 36 travellers, the full-day guided kayak caps at 16, and the self-guided 6-hour kayak caps at 20. The private hinterland day is a private group, so you set the makeup of your party.

Where Do The Tours Depart From?

Nearly all trips leave from Elanda Point on Lake Cootharaba, at the Habitat Noosa Everglades Eco Camp or the Elanda Point Canoe Launch on Lake Flat Road, about 25 minutes north of Noosa. From Tewantin, drive 19km via McKinnon Drive and Louis Bazzo Drive to Boreen Point, then turn left onto Lake Flat Road and drive 2km to the Elanda Point access road. The private hinterland day instead picks you up at your door across Noosa, the Sunshine Coast and the Hinterland.
